Chassis No. 03924
Engine No. 0009702
Ferrari introduced the Dino 246 GT in 1969 as the next evolution of its first mid-engine, V6-powered road car, marrying a 2.4-liter Formula Two-bred engine with Pininfarina-styled coachwork. By mid-1971, the third and final “E Series” embodied the most refined evolution of the 246 GT, featuring dual-Weber DCNF/19 carburetors and a Magneti Marelli ignition system to develop 195 CV. The completely revised five-speed transmission, with longer gear ratios, and a reworked dashboard-now with provisions for the optional air conditioning-enhanced practicality. With 3,061 examples of the Series E GT produced between 1971 and 1974, these models represent the 246 GT in its final and most mechanically sophisticated form.
According to a report compiled by Dino historian Matthias Bartz, chassis number 03924 was completed at Maranello on 23 May 1972 as a desirable late E-Series example. It was specified in the rare and attractive shade of Blu Chiaro Metallizzato (Light Blue Metallic) over Rosso (Red) leather, a combination reported as one of only 52 finished in this shade, and it was additionally equipped from new with electric windows and air conditioning, two of the most sought-after comfort options offered for the model.
Dispatched to the United States via Chinetti Garthwaite Imports Inc., the Dino was sold on 11 August 1973 to Deborah Hurley of Pennsylvania, with its original warranty booklet remaining with the car. Documented later ownership includes Bill Penn of Illinois from 1980 to 1981, before the Dino was registered in Loire, France in 1990, where a Ferrari France Club member reportedly returned the car to its original color and exercised it at club events, including the marque's 50th anniversary gathering at Le Vigeant.
Acquired by another French custodian in 1998 with just over 50,000 miles, the Dino was carefully maintained by Sud Racing in Montpellier throughout this ownership. Invoices on file document this ongoing care, including a comprehensive valve-clearance service with shim adjustment, system bleeding, and road testing completed in February 2023.
Today, chassis 03924 is a delightfully authentic example with the unmistakable feel of a cherished car that has never required a full restoration. It still wears its 1990s refinish with the right amount of subtle patina on its red leather upholstery, while retaining its original matching-numbers engine per Bartz's report. Showing 70,780 miles at cataloging and offered without reserve, this Dino is now ready to excel at Ferrari Owners' Club events or be enjoyed on historic tours, its aftermarket stainless-steel exhaust lending a delightful V6 snarl to match its deft mid-engine handling.
