The automotive industry is not the first to be accused of “no longer making them like they used to.” Such disparaging comments are almost always leveled by the devotees of one generation over another, fondly looking back on the perceived superiority of past art and collectibles. Mid-century European sports cars are no exception, and the products of Maranello's Prancing Horse, Ferrari, are surely the poster child for perfection. Without exception, Ferrari's sports racing cars of the era evoke images and emotions of danger, speed, glorious sound, and raw power, all enveloped in hand-formed bodywork that is stunning, even in its comparative simplicity.

The reasons for change are well known: improved safety standards that impact design, refined expertise of aerodynamics and the shapes that are more functional (if not less attractive), all against the backdrop of a bygone era of daring, heroic, and frequently blue-blooded racing drivers like Wolfgang von Trips, Peter Collins, and Alfonso de Portago. So, it is all the more remarkable that cars like this SP2 exist-a breathtaking design with otherworldly performance that harkens back to a bygone era so exactingly that no one would dare suggest it is anything other than perfect.

The Monza SP2, along with its sibling the Monza SP1, was unveiled by Ferrari in September 2018. The pilot program of a forthcoming “Icona” series, Ferrari called them “iconic cars whose sophisticated design and engineering are inspired by legendary Ferrari sports cars of the past,” specifically the 1950s. For the SP1 and SP2, the inspiration was quite clearly from the 1948 Ferrari 166MM “barchetta,” the gorgeous 750 Monza and 860 Monza. Unsurprisingly, the cars were targeted at exclusive existing clients of Ferrari, with just 499 examples being produced across both SP1 and SP2 variants. Whereas the SP1 was a single-seat road car, the SP2 eliminates the tonneau cover to allow space for a second passenger, with the addition of a second headrest fairing.

Based on Maranello's most extreme tourer, the 812 Superfast, the Monza pairs a svelte carbon-fiber barchetta body with the 812's 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12-Ferrari's most powerful naturally aspirated engine at the time of its launch, delivering 798 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of torque for a claimed zero-to-62 mile per hour time of 2.9 seconds. With no windshield to speak of-only Ferrari's ingenious ''Virtual Windshield,'' which channels airflow through the hood and ejects it ahead of the driver-the Monza delivers an elemental, visceral experience that is closer in spirit to the Mille Miglia than to any modern road car.

This stunning Monza SP2, chassis 266102, evokes the liveries of Ferrari's most seductive racing barchettas of the 1950s with its quintessential Rosso Corsa finish contrasted by the open cockpit showcasing a pair of GT2 monocoque seats upholstered in Jeans Aunde Blu upholstery. Externally, the Rosso Corsa bodywork is punctuated throughout by an extensive carbon fiber package, encompassing the front spoiler, engine covers, wheelhouse arches, front air vents, rear diffuser, under-door covers, exterior sill kicks, and the front luggage compartment area. The headrest fairing “Monza SP2” logo is rendered in Giallo Modena, which reappears on the brake calipers, creating a vivid accent against the red bodywork. The airbrushed Scuderia shields adorn the front wings, while 21-inch forged diamond-polished wheels complete the nostalgic yet modern specification.

Within the cockpit, the Jeans Aunde Blu fabric seat upholstery is joined by Nero leather and Nero Alcantara floormats with tone-on-tone stitching throughout. The Cavallino is embroidered into the headrests, while the four-point safety harnesses are finished in black. A Giallo Modena 12 o'clock marker stripe on the steering wheel and a yellow rev counter neatly ties the cabin's color scheme neatly together with the exterior accents. Lastly, the much-needed suspension lifter and front and rear parking cameras round out the carefully considered personalization of this SP2.

According to its accompanying Ferrari Classiche “Yellow Book,” issued to special-series Ferraris during production, chassis 266102 was delivered in June 2021 via Ferrari North America Inc. in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey to its first and sole owner since new. The car was subsequently serviced by Ferrari of Long Island in November 2024, when it received a full fluids service. Presently showing a scant 16 miles at the time of cataloging, this exceptional SP2 remains in the same condition as when it was first delivered nearly five years ago.

This extends to the vast suite of original delivery items which accompany the car, not least of which includes the highly sought after “Racing Driver Set.” Fittingly for the two-seat SP2, the set comprises a pair of carbon fiber helmets by Berluti, each with its own matching leather carry case, two “pilot suits” along with two pairs of plongé leather driving gloves by Loro Piana, and two sets of driving goggles-together clothing both driver and passenger in appropriate attire conceived in the same era-evoking spirit as the Monza itself. All are offered in unused, as-delivered condition.

A thoroughly captivating modern interpretation of Ferrari's most romantic chapter, the Monza SP2 is among the most covetable automobiles produced by Maranello in the 21st century-a car reserved exclusively for Ferrari's most cherished clients, of whom fewer than 499 in the world could claim ownership across both SP1 and SP2 variants. That chassis 266102 is offered here from single ownership, with a mere 16 miles recorded and accompanied by its delivery accessories in unused condition, makes this an extraordinary collecting opportunity for Ferraristi. Whether its next custodian chooses to experience it as Ferrari intended, at speed, with the naturally aspirated V12 singing at full cry, or simply to hold it as the collector's piece it was always intended it to be, this SP2 is as pure and unspoiled an example of the Icona series as one could hope to encounter.
