Although Ferrari has a long history of bespoke tailoring of production cars to the exacting requirements of preferred clients, it was not until the 360 Challenge Stradale of 2003 that a serious track-ready yet still road legal Ferrari was produced in significant numbers. The formula proved irresistible: an arsenal of racing-bred technology, reduced weight, and heightened driver engagement, without sacrificing the alluring usability expected of Ferrari's road cars. The successive F430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale further refined the concept. By the time their successor arrived, Ferrari's track-focused special-series V8 models had become some of the most desirable modern cars to emerge from Maranello.
In the spring of 2018 Ferrari announced their new, highly-anticipated fourth generation production road/track car based on the 488 GTB, appropriately named the 488 Pista; its open-roof counterpart-the 488 Pista Spider-following later that summer. Both versions featured the same 488 Challenge-derived engine, which employed a lightweight crankshaft, titanium connecting rods, revised camshafts and lighter turbocharger internals; the new unit producing some 710 horsepower. The Spider variant not only differentiated itself with a power folding hard top, but also featured a retractable rear window that treated the occupants to a front-row performance of the 3.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8's symphony whether the roof was up or down.
The base model's seven-speed dual-clutch transmission was modified to speed up gearshifts to just 30 milliseconds, while the Pista generated 20 percent more downforce than the GTB; an increase made possible by refinement of the car's underbody and the fitment of a rear diffuser sourced from the 488 GTE race car. Finally, strenuous efforts were made to optimize the operation of the Electronic Differential, Side Slip Angle Control, Traction Control and braking systems; their near-perfect interaction resulting in handling considered superior even to the hitherto class-leading Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
While the 488 Pista Spider featured a dry weight of 3,042 pounds-nearly 200 pounds heavier than the berlinetta-its performance was equal to the hard top Pista: zero-to-62 mph was achieved in a mere 2.8 seconds en route to a top speed of over 211 mph. Suitably unleashed in its natural environment of Fiorano, a further two seconds were cut from the 458 Speciale's lap time; the car's incredible throttle response-considered as close to that of a normally aspirated engine as could possibly be-being particularly impressive.
This 2020 Ferrari 488 Pista Spider is finished in Rosso Corsa, bisected with a Special Equipment Italian Flag down the center with edges in Bianco Avus and Verde Bandiera. The exterior is further enhanced with Scuderia Ferrari fender shields and a healthy amount of carbon fiber that trims its aerodynamic elements, front air vents, and other accents. Inside, its Extra-Range Nero leather upholstery is balanced with Rosso Ferrari inserts attached to its carbon fiber Large Size racing seats, Bianco Cavallino stitching in the headrests, and black perforated Alcantara and Rosso Molteni fabric on the seat centers-a Special Equipment option. The cockpit is also appointed with carbon fiber trim throughout, including on the upper console and inner sill trim. This 488 Pista Spider's large selection of options is rounded out with the suspension lifter, high-power hi-fi system, parking camera, and adaptive frontlight system.
